Smol Dishwasher Tablets

Smol Dishwasher Tablets: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

About Smol:

Smol was set up to provide eco friendly cleaning products which are delivered straight to you. They provide (most products) in plastic free, recyclable packaging, which is the main reason I trialled these.

The dishwashing tablets are all-in-one so that you shouldn't need to buy salt or rinse-aid. Additionally, all their products are cruelty free and come with a child-lock mechanism.

Setting up your orders is really easy. They ask you how many times you run the dishwasher a week, and from that calculate how often to send you your delivery. And you don't even have to pay for postage!

My Swap:

This is how my last two types of dishwashing tablets compare to Smol's in price and packaging:

  • The first came in 25g of recyclable plastic, using about 125g of plastic a year. They cost £15 for 81 tablets, 19p per tablet.
  • The second came in 140g of plastic packaging, with no instructions on recycling. This totals about 500g of plastic a year. They cost £18.75 for 115 tablets, 16p per tablet
This multiplied across every dishwasher in the UK represents a vast amount of plastic. In comparison, the Smol dishwasher tablets cost £4.60 for 30 tablets, 15p per tablet. They come in 60g of recyclable cardboard.

My Findings:

Really the tablets were not very different in performance at all. There were some washes that things didn't come out completely clean, however these items don't come out clean with the other dishwashing tablets either. As I wasn't out of the other tablets I have been switching between the two with no noticeable difference by myself or the rest of the house. Therefore, in terms of clean, they keep up with mainstream brands.

Additionally, if having child lock is important to you, I can reassure that it is hard to get the box open without reading how. (Even after reading how too.)

Having them delivered was nice, but slightly unnecessary. Their reasoning is that it gives one less reason to go to the shops. However, as I buy dishwashing tablets with everything else, having them delivered isn't crucial. It would be nice to see Smol sold in shops too.

I couldn't find anything on their website specific to offsetting the carbon footprint of their deliveries. However, there is lots of information about carbon footprint of the product, for example their claim of using 35% less carbon than the average.

Once your dishwashing plan is set up, you don't need to think about running out again, as they send you what you need when you need it. The flexibility on orders is really good. From your account you can skip, pause and move delivery dates forwards or backwards. Smol also emails you with a few days notice of your next payment, so if for any reason you do want to cancel, you have time to do so.

Conclusion:

Smol tablets are a good alternative, performing just as well as other brands I've used. They are more economically viable than I had initially expected, and I appreciate the flexibility they offer on their deliveries. You can trial them for just £1 (the cost to deliver), so worth giving them a go.
